Royals defeat Shakopee in home meet

The Watertown-Mayer/Delano girls’ swimming and diving team defeated Shakopee 104-64 on Tuesday, Oct. 15, in the team’s final regular season meet.

The Royals took an early 12-2 lead after taking the top two spots in the opening 200-yard medley relay, and never looked back on their way to a big win on senior night.

Morgan Frank, Jordyn Wentzel, Zoe Anderson and Sommer Heikkila teamed up to win the 200-yard medley relay, while the team of Thea Clark, Kalley Johnson, Jenna Grangroth and Emily Bobick finished second.

The Royals went on to win eight more events over the course of the night, including two for Wentzel and two for Kayla Stevens. Stevens won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.72 seconds, and she also took first in the 100-yard freestyle in 58.37 seconds. Wentzel won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:30.41, as well as the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:17.26.

Frank also had a first-place finish for the Royals in the 200-yard individual medley, clocking in with a time of 2:25.88. Clark won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:11.03.

The Royals also won two other relays. Frank, Lauren York, Heikkila and Stevens teamed up to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:48.79, and Frank, Stevens, York and Wentzel won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:00.12.

A number of Royals also earned second-place finishes, including Min Van Dyne in the 200-yard freestyle (2:16.98) and Heikkila in the 200-yard IM (2:30.15). Sophia Fillmore was second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:11.93) and Bobick was second in the 500-yard freestyle (6:06.02).

Caitlyn Rud earned a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (2:17.19) and Grangroth was third in the 200-yard IM (2:33.66). Lindsay Kantrovich was third in the 50-yard freestyle (27.71) and Anderson was third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:13.42). Heikkila was third in the 100-yard freestyle (1:01.70) and Johnson was third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:18.13).

The Royals competed in the JV Wright County Conference meet on Monday, Oct. 21, at Dassel-Cokato High School, and the varsity conference meet will be Saturday, Oct. 26, at 10 a.m. at Hutchinson Middle School. The sectional meet will be Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 7-9, at Minnetonka.
