Boys’ soccer third in Class A

The Waconia boys' soccer team tied for third in the Class A state tournament on Tuesday morning.

The WHS boys’ soccer team tied for third in the Class A state tournament on Tuesday morning.

With a 2-2 tie this morning with Sartell-St. Stephen, the Waconia boys’ soccer team will share Class A third place honors with the Sabres.

Tied 0-0 at halftime, the Sabres took a 2-0 lead in the second half before seniors Charlie Spurbeck and Marcel Montiel scored for Waconia within five minutes of each other to tie the game. The MSHSL does not break third place ties in state tournament games, so when regulation time ended, so did the game.

Senior Jack Dirnberger had four saves in goal for WHS. The Waconia offense had 11 total shots on goal.

The Wildcats landed in the third place game after losing in the Class A semifinals to Hill-Murray in a 1-0 game yesterday afternoon. Last Friday, Oct. 25, Waconia bested Hermantown 5-0 in Chisago Lakes to continue in the tournament.

WHS finished the season 17-2-3, winning the team’s third consecutive WCC title, second straight Section 6A championship, and the team’s second trip to state.
