Cool conditions made for a good day of racing and some fast times at the Section 5A cross country meet, where Mayer Lutheran’s Brandon Duffy qualified for this weekend’s Class A state race.
Finishing eighth in 17:15, Duffy assured himself a return trip to state, after qualifying in 2011. Alex Mielke finished 69th overall in 18:59, over one minute faster than his last appearance at Milaca. Wyatt Entinger bested his season best by 22 seconds to finish 73rd in 19:04.
Quiram also ran a season best, finishing 97th in 19:43. Parker Esterberg finished 100th in 19:57, over Todd Johnson in 108th (20:26) and Andrew Jackson in 129th (22:44).
“Having four boys run their season’s best times and the other three within 10 seconds of their best times was a great way to end the season,” head coach Rob Weber said.
In the girls’ race, Emilie Berry ran her fastest time of the season at 16:06, missing the state entry but finishing 23rd. Karlea Kyllo finished 63rd in 17:30 before Clara Leverich finished 117th, Grace Dietrich in 126th, and Mikaila Norman in 128th.
“The girls had a good finish to the season and are looking forward to next year,” Weber said. “Four girls were in their first season of cross country. Losing only one senior, Mikaila Norman, and hoping for some promising newcomers, the girls are hoping to be contenders in the MRC next year.”
Duffy will compete at the Class A state meet this Saturday, Nov. 2 at St. Olaf College in Northfield. The boys race begins at 2 p.m.
