WMD finishes fifth in WCC swimming

The Watertown-Mayer/Delano girls’ swimming and diving team finished in fifth place in the Wright County Conference after Saturday’s conference championship meet. 

The conference champion is determined by a combination of points won during dual meets and points at the championship meet. WMD finished fifth both in the championship meet and in the final standings.

Hutchinson won the conference title, scoring 463.5 points, while Dassel-Cokato, which scored 379 points was second. Orono, which actually went 6-0 in duals, finished third after scoring 354.5 points in the championship meet. Watertown-Mayer/Delano finished with 312 points at the conference meet, just missing fourth place by 7.5 points.

In individual events, the top 16 swimmers earned points for their team. For WMD, 12 different swimmers scored at least one point for their team, including Jordyn Wentzel, who had two top-three finishes, including a meet victory and a meet record in the 500-yard freestyle. Wentzel finished in 5:15.4, breaking the old record by about four seconds. She was also third in the 200-yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:15.34.

Morgan Frank also had two top-three finishes for the Royals. She was second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.28, and was third in the 500-freestyle in 5:26.15.

The 500 Freestyle was a strong event for the Royals, with four swimmers in the top 13. In  addition to Wentzel and Frank, Mady Hendricks finished ninth in a time of 5:50.80, and Emily Bobick was 13th in 5:54.46. Hendricks also added a 10th-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:17.46.

Kayla Stevens had a couple of top-10 finishes for the Royals, with her best result being fifth place in the 200-yard freestyle. She finished that event in a time of 2:04.19, and was also eighth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 57.73 seconds.

Kalley Johnson and Lauren York also scored points in multiple events for the Royals. Johnson was seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:13.65, and 12th in the 200-yard IM in 2:27.88. York was 10th in the 100-yard freestyle in 58.76 seconds and 11th in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.79 seconds.

Thea Clark added a ninth-place finish for the Royals with a time of 1:06.61 in the 100-yard backstroke, Sommer Heikkila was 10th in the 200-yard IM in 2:27.16, Maggie Jacobs was 13th in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:18.08, Caitlyn Rud was 13th in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:11.07, and Jenna Grangroth was 16th in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:11.64.

The Royals’ best finish in a relay came in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team made up of Frank, York, Stevens and Wentzel combined to finish in 3:51.89.

The Royals will now prepare for the section meet, which will be held Nov. 7-9 at Minnetonka.
