While section foes Willmar and Prior Lake proved beatable to the Waconia volleyball team, it would be Wright County Conference champion Delano that knocked the Wildcats from the Section 2AAA tournament last week.
Falling 3-0 to Delano on Oct. 29, the Wildcats held a lead in the first set, but the Tigers closed the set to take it 26-24. That momentum for the Tigers would also give them sets two and three 25-21 and 25-18.
“We were hoping to capitalize on our lead at the end of the first set,” WHS head coach Jim Lee said, “But Delano closed it on a nice run and carried it into the next two sets. Our team did a fantastic job of closing the gap on Delano in the third set and refused to stay down.”
Juniors Jessica Wolf and Jenna Van De Velde led the Wildcat attack with 11 kills each, while senior Roz Holasek tallied seven service points. On defense, senior Kirsten Wagener had three blocks. Digs came from a variety of players, including senior Samantha Paulson (10), junior Anna Schmitt (10), and senior Julia Allenson (7).
“The seniors led the team in stats and on the court,” Lee said, “but Delano just proved to be too powerful.”
The Wildcats finished the season 23-8 and finished second in the WCC behind Delano. The Tigers went on to defeat Chaska for an entry to the state tournament, where they finished second only to Eagan in Class AAA.
