Jordyn Wentzel, an eighth grader for the Watertown-Mayer/Delano swimming team, qualified for the state meet during last week’s sectional meet in Minnetonka.
Wentzel qualified in the 500-yard freestyle by virtue of her fourth-place finish. She finished that event in 5:14.08. She’ll move on to compete in the Class AA state meet, which features swimming preliminaries on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m. The finals would be Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 6 p.m.
Wentzel’s strong performance at the section meet was part of an overall seventh-place finish for the Royals, who compete in the toughest section in the state. Minnetonka won the meet with 515 points, followed by Eden Prairie (476), Edina (462), Hopkins (188), Minneapolis Southwest (160) and St. Louis Park (117). The Royals finished with 94 points, beating out eighth-place Minneapolis South (69).
The Royals had four swimmers combine to swim in six A or B finals, including two appearances in the A Final, both of which came in the 500 freestyle. In addition to Wentzel’s fourth-place finish in the A-Final of the 500-freestyle, seventh-grader Morgan Frank also finished eighth place in that event with a time of 5:27.05.
Frank and Wentzel each added another 11th-place finish while swimming in a B-Final. Wentzel finished 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:10.27, and Frank was 11th in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:58.44.
Kalley Johnson also swam in the B-Final of the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 16th place overall with a time of 1:13.49. Lauren York was also 16th overall in the 50-yard freestyle after reaching the B-Final. Her time was 26.64 seconds.
The Royals also had two top-six finishes in relays. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Kayla Stevens, York, Sommer Heikkila and Frank finished fifth with a time of 1:44.66, and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Frank, Sophia Fillmore, Stevens and Wentzel finished sixth in 3:48.37.
