Waconia High School musicians participate in Honor Bands

The Waconia High School Instrumental Music Program had a large number of students participating in Collegiate Honor Bands this fall. The colleges visited were the University of St Thomas (St. Paul, Minn.), University of St. Olaf, University of Minnesota – Duluth, Loras College (Dubuque, Iowa).
Each of the students were nominated by John Pohland and Philip Snyder, band directors at Waconia High School, and were selected by the nomination committees at the schools. Most of these honor bands are all day events where students will rehearse all day with students from across the Midwest, and then perform in a concert in the evening.
“In most cases, there are close to 500 or more nominations, and about one-fourth of those nominees are actually selected to the honor band,” Pohland noted. “Students in these honor bands get the opportunity to work with collegiate conductors, as well as guest composers and conductors from around the world.”
