Young ‘Cats set to return in 2014

The Waconia girls’ soccer team has a lot to be proud of from 2013, finishing one of the best seasons the program has ever seen.

The ‘Cats overall record continued to improve, hitting 12-6-1 in 2013. Three of the team’s six losses came in games against Orono.

Waconia finished second only to Orono in the Wright County Conference, defeating Holy Family twice, which was a large accomplishment for the team.

The Wildcats also had their best ever section seeding, seeded third, and made it all the way to the section semifinals before falling to Orono.

The Wildcats were nothing short of hardworking and dedicated, according to head coach Mike Bruggeman.

“You saw a team that was dissatisfied with every game that wasn’t a victory, and even some that were,” he said. “You saw a team that advanced their capabilities … solving problems as other teams adjusted to our play and findings ways to make every game competitive.”

Bruggeman said the program is continuing to grow and the Wildcats are on an upwards trajectory of success.

Waconia loses a strong senior class this season which includes 2013 captains Bailey Breeggemann and Jacey Zapf, along with Emily Hilk, Samantha Laumann, Mackenna Trnka, and Mackenzie Hedlund.

Zapf led the Wildcats with 16 goals this season, followed by Hilk with 11. Also scoring for WHS this season were Trina Rinke (6), Jaidyn Zapf (4), Megan Kirsch (4), Taylor LeMasters (3), Haley Schoenfelder (2), Claire Sites, Breeggemann, Laumann, Liz Honnold, and Emily Zemple.

Jacey Zapf and Hilk also led in assists, with eight and six, respectively. Other assists came from Rinke (4), Jaidyn Zapf (4), LeMasters (3), Schoenfelder (3), Shannon Conway (3), Sites (2), Breeggemann (2), Trnka (2), Laumann, and Caroline Watson.

All-Conference awards went to Breeggemann, Hilk, Rinke, and Jacey Zapf. Both Hilk and Zapf were nominated for All-State awards, while Zapf received an All-State Runner Up.

Team awards included: Leadership (Jacey Zapf), Legacy (Breeggemann), Abacus Awards (LeMasters and Jaidyn Zapf), Outstanding Attacker (Hilk), Outstanding Defender (Rinke), Newcomer Award (Maddie Harris and Erinne Nagy).

Trina Rinke and Claire Sites will captain the team in 2014.
