A championship is a great way to start a season, as the Mayer Lutheran Crusader dance team found out last weekend after being crowed the 2013 Timberwolves Champions.
Competing against Class AA team Albany at the Target Center on Dec. 7 for the title, LHS head coach Maryann Porter said it was great to be back where the Crusaders ended last season, on the state court.
Mayer Lutheran finished first in jazz with a rank score of three to Albany’s six. Albany came out just ahead of LHS in the high kick, but with an overall competition score of 342 over Albany’s 308, the Crusaders were declared the winners.
Porter said she was very pleased with the team’s first performances of the year and added that the team’s scores are already higher than they were at this point last season.
“The majority of our scores were in the above average to good range,” she said, “so that is a great way to start our season knowing we are currently ahead of the state average.”
This weekend, the Crusaders will compete at BOLD, and will get a taste of some section teams in Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop and New Ulm Cathedral.
“We also get to see how we are stacking up against some of the other state jazz qualifiers from last year Renville County West and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton from Section 1A,” Porter said.
