After losing the opening game of the season, the Mayer Lutheran boys’ basketball team has won its last six contests, including picking up two Minnesota River Conference wins over Jordan and Belle Plaine last week.
Now leading the MRC with an unblemished 3-0 record, the Crusaders are 6-1 this season as the 2013 portion of the season comes to a close.
Defeating Jordan 55-42 on Dec. 10, the Crusaders led 26-19 at halftime and outscored the Hubmen 29-23 in the second half. Top scorers for Mayer Lutheran included senior Anthony Gruenhagen with 12 points, sophomore Sam Schlueter (10), junior Taylor Otterstatter (8), and senior Cole Buttenhoff (7).
The Crusaders held a 29-23 halftime lead against Belle Plaine a few nights later on Dec. 13, but the Trojans rallied in the second half to make a run at Mayer Lutheran. With Belle Plaine outscoring Mayer Lutheran 42-37 in the second half, the Crusaders narrowly escaped with a 66-65 win.
Senior Joe Zittergruen and Buttenhoff led Mayer Lutheran with 14 points each, followed by Gruenhagen (13) and senior Mason Diedrick (9).
The Crusaders are at a tournament in Maple Lake this weekend. They will return to action Jan. 7 at LeSueur-Henderson.
