LHS boys’ soccer prepares for 2014

MLSoccerLogoNEW2013.aiThe new co-op between the Watertown-Mayer and Mayer Lutheran boys’ soccer programs proved very beneficial for the newly united Crusaders in 2013, as the team rose to an 8-8 season, picking up the first ever wins for the LHS boys’ program.

Although the season began 0-2 with losses to Delano and PACT Charter, the Crusaders quickly rebounded with their first win over Concordia Academy-Roseville on Sept. 3, a 4-1 victory. Throughout September, Mayer Lutheran would pick up five more victories over Bethany Academy, Glencoe-Silver Lake, Big Lake, Becker, and St. John’s Prep. The Crusaders also won their final two games of the regular season over Rockford and St. Agnes before falling to Chaska in the opening round of the Section 6A tournament.

With a finally-full roster, the Crusaders will graduate just six varsity members this season. The group, however, includes some of the team’s top players in Nick Hix, Matt Scanlon, Chris Bakke, Dillon Derner, Nicholas DeNomme, and Mitchell Diers.

However next year’s upperclassmen have earned plenty of varsity experience over the past few seasons and should make the transition smoothly, including to-be seniors Caleb Sebora, Eli North, Dain Aarrestad, and Dustin Koehnen.
