Waconia Lions help deliver packages to military

As it has for the past couple of years, the Waconia Lions Club provided thousands of dollars worth of postage to enable local citizens to send packages to local members of the military who are serving overseas this holiday season. Here, Lions Paul Melchert, Rick Wagener and Chuck Schmidt and post office employee Jill Thiesfeld smile for a photo at the Waconia Post Office. (Submitted photo)

The Waconia Lions support local members of the military serving abroad by making their Christmas a little better by paying for Christmas packages that are mailed to local military members who are serving abroad.
The packages not only came from the families of the military, they come from school classrooms, from veterans organizations and from groups of people that organized themselves to do a little something nice for the military at Christmas. On two recent Saturday mornings, the Lions worked at the Waconia Post Office and mailed more than 200 packages to military members that will not be home for the holidays.
The cost of the project was approximately $3,400. The local volunteers that worked on the project were Ricky Wagener, Joe Gifford, Tim “Jonsey” Hukriede, Jim Sanborn, Paul Melchert and Chuck Schmidt.
The Waconia Lions express their appreciation to The Waconia Patriot for publicizing the event, and a very special thanks to the Waconia Post Office staff for their hard work to get the job done.
