Agronomy Update to be held in Cologne on Jan. 31

The Carver County Agronomy Update event will be held at the Cologne Community Center on Friday, Jan. 31. The program is sponsored by UM-Extension, Mid-County Co-op, Minnesota Corn Growers Association, and UFC. Those who are interested in attending are asked to RSVP for the meal count by contacting the Carver County Extension office at (952) 466-5306 or e-mailing Abby Neu at neux0012@umn.edu.
The event begins at 9:30 a.m. and includes updates on Corn Fertility, Corn & Soybean Weed Control and Corn Rootworm Traits. Private Pesticide Applicator Training will also be offered.
The Corn Fertility Update starts at 9:40 a.m. Dr. Daniel Kaiser, University of Minnesota Extension Soils Specialist, is scheduled to review University of Minnesota corn starter fertilizer research, sulfur fertility recommendations and the use of coated nitrogen fertilizer products such as ESN for corn production.
At 10:30 a.m., David Nicolai, Regional Extension crops educator, will lead the Corn & Soybean Weed Control Update. Nicolai will provide an herbicide product label update for 2014 and recommendations for the weed control options in regards to glyphosate resistant weeds such as Giant Ragweed and Waterhemp.
After a brief break, Dr. Ken Ostlie, University of Minnesota Extension Corn Entomologist, will lead a discussion on Corn Rootworm Traits,  Resistance and Management. Ostlie will present the latest information on the status of resistance issues, the performance of traits in lab and field studies, and field research updates on management strategies, including traits, soil and foliar insecticides.
Lunch, courtesy of the program’s sponsors, will be served at noon, followed by the Private Pesticide Applicator Training at 12:30 p.m. Those needing to re-certify for 2014 are encouraged to participate.
The program is scheduled to adjourn at 4 p.m.
