The Mayer Lutheran boys’ basketball team picked up another Minnesota River Conference win last week by defeating Watertown-Mayer 66-49 at home on Jan. 10.
The score was tight in the first half, and while Mayer Lutheran went on some scoring runs, the Royals would quickly catch up. The teams were tied at 29-29 headed into the locker room at halftime.
The Crusaders opened multiple leads in the second half, but never led by more than seven or eight points until the final seven minutes. With six to play, Mayer Lutheran opened a 13-point lead that they expand to 15 points by the end of game, outscoring Watertown-Mayer 37-20 in the second half.
The following night, the Crusaders traveled to Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted and lost a 75-59 game. Trailing by just one point at halftime, 36-35, the Crusaders cooled off in the second half and were outscored 38-24 by the Lakers.
While HLWW had five players scoring in double digits, senior Cole Buttenhoff and sophomore Sam Schlueter were the only two Crusaders to do so, scoring 14 and 13 points respectively. Senior Anthony Gruenhagen (7), junior Taylor Otterstatter (7), and senior Mason Diedrick (6) also posted significant points.
Now 9-3 on the season, the Crusaders lead the MRC with an unblemished 5-0 record and are set for a string of conference games beginning tonight in Sibley East. Next week, the Crusaders will host Tri-City United and Jordan on Tuesday and Friday.
