The Watertown-Mayer/Waconia/Delano boys’ swimming and diving team lost to Hopkins in a dual meet last Thursday, Jan. 16, but posted a strong showing in Section 2A True Team meet on Saturday, Jan. 18, at Sauk Centre.
At the True Team section meet, the Royals finished in second place as a team, scoring 810 points, finishing behind only Breck/Blake, which scored 1,232 points. The Royals finished ahead of Richfield, Orono, Mound-Westonka and Waconia. At the True Team meet, the Waconia swimmers from the normal WMWD co-op swam as their own team, thus allowing Watertown-Mayer/Delano to compete at the Class A level instead of Class AA, where WMWD has competed in the past.
Zach Holman and Ben DeSutter each led the Royals with two top-three finishes at the meet. Holman picked up the Royals’ only win on the day, taking first in the 100-yard butterfly in 54.8 seconds. He was also third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.92.
DeSutter’s best event was the 100-yard backstroke, where he finished second in 1:01.30. He was also third in the 100-yard butterfly in 59.92 seconds.
Tristan Gens and Jack Dalluge each had two finishes in the top three. Gens was second in diving with 332.4 points, and he was fifth in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.84 seconds. Dalluge was third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.31 and fifth in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:28.50.
Jake Weber added a third-place finish for the Royals in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.08 seconds. He was also seventh in the 100-yard freestyle in 56.99 seconds.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Austin Gilbert logged a sixth-place finish for the Royals in 1:12.65. He was also seventh in the 200-yard IM in 2:24.51.
Brent Unowsky finished seventh for the Royals in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:06.22. He was also eighth in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 5:47.62.
Allan Janikula logged an eighth-place finish in the 200-yard IM in 2:28.10 and a 10th place finish in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:08.79. Tyler Hannan finished eighth in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.33 seconds and 10th in the 100-yard freestyle in 58.64 seconds.
Competing for Waconia in this meet, Givon Kumal also finished eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:15.03 and 10th in the 200-yard IM in 2:31.34. Also competing for Waconia, Adam Bartell finished 10th in both the 200-yard freestyle (2:15.32) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:53.76).
For WMD, John kenison was ninth in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:53.40, and Trent Peterson was 10th in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:36.12.
The Royals also finished second in two relays. In the 200-yard medley relay, Unowsky, Holman, DeSutter and Dalluge teamed up to finish with a time of 1:50.26, and in the 400-yard freestyle relay, Dalluge, Weber, DeSutter and Holman finished with a time of 3:42.48.
Hopkins 89, Royals 79
The Royals won five events, including two from junior Zach Holman, but Hopkins emerged victorious in the non-conference dual in Watertown.
Holman’s wins came in the 50-yard freestyle, with a time of 23.17 seconds, and in the 100-yard freestyle, with a time of 51.84 seconds. Holman was also part of the Royals’ winning team in the 400-yard freestyle relay, which also included Jack Dalluge, Brent Unowsky and Ben DeSutter, and finished with a time of 3:39.50.
Dalluge and DeSutter each had wins of their own as well. Dalluge finished first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:54.38, and DeSutter was first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.68. DeSutter was also second in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:17.44, and Dalluge was second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:20.08.
Austin Gilbert added a second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:13.21, and Unowsky had a pair of third-place finishes. He finished the 200-yard freestyle in 2:06.45 and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:06.82.
Jake Weber finished third for the Royals in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.18 seconds. Givon Kumal was third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:16.44.
The Royals were also in action Tuesday, when they hosted St. Louis Park on Jan. 21. On Thursday, Jan. 23, the Royals will once again be competing at home, when they host Orono at 6 p.m. The Royals will also be competing at an invitational in Buffalo on Saturday, Jan. 25, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
