The Watertown-Mayer wrestling team went 2-1 in duals last week. The Royals swept a triangular on Tuesday, Jan. 21, opening with a 34-28 win over Dassel-Cokato before closing with a 66-9 win over Big Lake. The Royals also tried to rally from a 23-8 deficit on Friday, Jan. 24, against Sibley East, but came up a bit short in the end.
Royals 34, DC 28
The Royals led 15-0 early, and later rallied from a 16-15 deficit to earn the non-conference win.
A technical fall from Adam Sweeney at 106, a 12-0 major decision from Brady Kohls and 113 and a pin from Jackson Sweeney at 120 had the Royals out to a quick 15-0 lead before DC rallied. The Chargers won the next four matches, two by major decision, one by decision and one by technical fall as they stormed back to take a 16-15 lead.
However, Aaron Sweeney grabbed the momentum back for the Royals with a pin at 152 pounds to give the Royals the lead back at 21-16. DC got a decision at 160 pounds to close the gap to 160 pounds, and a pin at 170 pounds gave the Chargers a 25-21 lead with four matches left.
Bryce Kallenbach won a 5-3 decision at 182 pounds to cut the lead to 25-24, and Travis Bradley won by forfeit for the Royals at 195 pounds to put them in front, 30-25. That’s when Logan Cooper’s 13-2 major decision at 220 pounds clinched the win for the Royals before DC won a decision at heavyweight.

Sibley East 35, Royals 30
Watertown-Mayer’s Kendall Nowlan returned from a concussion to win by technical fall at 106 pounds and give the Royals a 5-0 lead, but Sibley East got the five points back in the next match at 113 pounds.
Jackson Sweeney’s 7-2 decision at 120 pounds gave the Royals the lead back at 8-5, but the Wolverines got a pin at 126 and never trailed again the rest of the night. Two decisions and a pin in the next three matches helped Sibley East push the lead to 23-8 before Jon Vouk won an 11-8 decision at 152 pounds.
Another pin for Sibley East at 160 gave the Wolverines a 29-11 lead, but Jesse Heck’s pin for the Royals at 170 pounds brought them within 29-17 and gave them new life.
However, Sibley East won a 16-9 decision at 182 pounds and got a pin at 195 to take a 35-20 lead and put the match out of reach.
Cooper won a 7-1 decision for the Royals at 220 pounds and Zach Larson earned a pin at heavyweight, but it wasn’t enough to make up the difference.
