The 2013-14 season has come to a close for the Mayer Lutheran dance team after a close, but in the end, disappointing competition at the Section 2A meet on Feb. 8 at Bloomington Kennedy High School, as the Crusaders failed to qualify for the state competition.
The Crusaders finished fourth in jazz, just one place shy of a state entry, after multiple tie-breakers.
“At the end of judging we were tied with Concordia Academy for third place with a rank score of 15,” LHS head coach Maryann Porter said. “We went through three tie-breakers and then they were finally able to break the tie and Concordia Academy ended up advancing to state.”
Although the Crusaders may have been disappointed with the missed state opportunity, Porter said the team put all their hearts into the performance.
“The girls danced with so much energy on the court and their love for the sport of dance team showed that day,” Porter said. “We knew it was going to be a close meet and that was the case.”
Rockford, PACT Charter, and Concordia Academy were the top three jazz teams and qualified to represent Section 2A at the state competition this weekend. Minnesota River Conference competitor Norwood Young America finished sixth in jazz.
Focusing on the jazz competition, the Crusaders put less attention on their high kick routine this year and finished eighth at the section competition. Last minute changes worked the routine for five dancers instead of six.
“With our injuries, we really needed to focus on one dance, so we de-emphasized kick this year, and with only two teams advancing from our section this year, it seemed to be the logical choice,” Porter said.
PACT Charter and Randolph qualified in high kick from Section 2A.
The state tournament is this weekend, Feb. 14-15, at the Target Center in Minneapolis. Class A jazz competition begins Friday morning, with high kick on Saturday.
