After a tough Section 2AA meet on Feb. 14-15 in Mankato, sophomore Ella Hommer will represent the Waconia gymnastics team at the individual state tournament this Saturday at the University of Minnesota.
Hommer qualifies after a second place finish on the balance beam at Section 2AA, scoring a 9.525. The top four competitors in each event and the all around advance to state, as well as the winning team.
Defending state champion New Prague defended its section title with a meet-winning 149.7. Watertown-Mayer gave the Trojans a run for their money, finishing second at 144.65, followed by Mankato West (137.95). Waconia finished fourth as a team at 136.05.
“We had a good meet!” WHS head coach Molly Ocarson said.
The top 10 competitors in each event were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Wildcats had just two competitors place in the top 10 of the all around. Hommer tied for sixth with an all around score of 34.925, while seventh grader Katie Fahrenkamp finished ninth at 34.55. Hommer placed in two events, including her second-place beam performance, as well as finishing ninth on floor at 9.2. Fahrenkamp placed eighth on bars at 8.45.
Also cracking the top 10, sophomore Abby Fahrenkamp was tenth on the floor exercise at 9.175.
The gymnastics state tournament is this weekend at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion. Team competition is Friday night, with Class A individuals competing on Saturday morning, Feb. 22, at 11 a.m.
