The WMHS girls’ basketball team jumped to 9-2 in the Minnesota River Conference last week after taking down Tri-City United and Sibley East. The Royals are now tied for second in the MRC with NYA Central at 9-2, trailing Jordan by just one game (10-2). The Royals are 14-7 overall.
Hosting Tri-City United on Feb. 11, the Royals held a commanding 33-18 lead at halftime. Outscoring the Titans 32-23 in the second half as well, the Royals cruised to the 65-41 victory.
Senior Chelsea Wandersee, freshman Claire Killian, and freshman Kirstin Klitzke all saw double figures, scoring 16, 15, and 11 points, respectively. The Royals shot 33 percent as a team, making 24 of 72 shots from the floor and were 10-14 at the charity stripe.
Klitzke and senior Liz Miller led the Royals defensively, pulling down eight and seven rebounds. Steal leaders included Wandersee (4) and Klitzke (3). As a team, the Royals totaled 41 rebounds and 19 steals against the Titans.
At Sibley East Friday night, the Royals picked up another MRC win, this one a 58-40 victory over the Wolverines. The Royals led 32-21 at halftime and outscored Sibley East 26-19 in the second half as well.
As a team, the Royals shot just over 31 percent from the floor (20-64) and were 13-21 at the free throw line (62 percent). Killian led the WMHS offense with 19 points, while Klitzke (16) and Wandersee (11) also added significant points for the Royals.
The Royals pulled down 31 total rebounds, with Miller snagging eight. Killian grabbed seven of the team’s 23 steals and sophomore Victoria Lynch had Watertown-Mayer’s sole blocked shot.
The Royals will host Annandale tonight and Mayer Lutheran tomorrow night in 7:30 p.m. games. They will wrap up the regular season next week at Jordan (Feb. 24) and against Glencoe-Silver Lake on Friday, Feb. 28.
