With a final 62-58 victory over Sibley East last week, the Mayer Lutheran boys’ basketball team captured the Minnesota River Conference title with a 12-2 conference record.
Hosting the Wolverines on Feb. 18, the Crusaders trailed by ten points at halftime, in a 33-23 deficit. But the Mayer Lutheran offense exploded in the second half, outscoring Sibley East 39-25 on their way to a 62-58 comeback win.
Senior Mason Diedrick and junior Taylor Otterstatter carried the Crusader offense as the only two players in double digits, netting 14 and 11 points, respectively. Seniors Anthony Gruenhagen and Chad Anenson were next, with 8 and 7 points.
With their 18-5 overall record, the Crusaders drew the No. 1 seed in the North subsection of Section 2AA and earned a first round bye. In a subsection eerily similar to the Minnesota River Conference, the Crusaders first match up will be Friday night, Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. in New Prague against No. 5 LeSueur-Henderson. This season, the Crusaders have defeated the Giants twice.
The winner of Friday’s game advances to the semifinals at Minnesota State University – Mankato on March 4 for a 6 p.m. game.
