Wickenhauser named Miss Teen Carver County

Hilary Wickenhauser

Hilary Wickenhauser, daughter of Don and Anna Wickenhauser of Cologne, has been named as Miss Teen Carver County International 2014. She will be competing for Miss Teen Minnesota at the Ritchie Auditorium in St. Cloud on Saturday, March 8.
Wickenhauser’s platform is “Readers to Leaders helping end illiteracy throughout the world.”
She is working with Lions Club International and the Cologne Leos to collect books to give to families without the financial resources to buy their own. Wickenhauser and the Cologne Leos have collected over 20,000 books with the help of the Lions Clubs of District 5M2.
They have sent 5,000 children’s books to Bernie’s Book Bank in Chicago to go to low income families in the Chicago suburbs. They have also sent 1,200 books to Lesotho Africa and built their library. Through Operation Paperback they have been able to send more than 3,000 books to soldiers currently serving and to their families waiting for them at home. Their current projects include processing the books they have and going to the Red Lake Indian Reservation to help them fill their library shelves and give to the families.
They will be building a library in Freeport Bahamas after the Red Lake Project.
The Cologne Leos also started a free Reading in the Park program last summer for families to come with their children. The children were read a book then they did an activity and had a snack relating to the children’s book.
Wickenhauser is more than willing to come and speak to local groups and organizations about what they can do to help end illiteracy. To contact Wickenhauser, email her at [email protected]
