Walter Martin Robert Blatz, age 97, of Chaska, Minn., died Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at Auburn Manor Care Center, Chaska.
Funeral Service was held Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at 11 a.m., at St. Johns Lutheran Church, 4th and Oak Street, Chaska, with the Rev. Greg Snow officiating. The visitation was one hour prior to service at the church. Casketbearers were Amanda Whitson, Tobiah Whitson, Pierre Schwartz, Dan Anderson, Stephen Wetzel and Ben Wetzel. Honorary Casketbearers were Lois Anderson and Lori Schwartz. Burial will be at St. Johns Lutheran Cemetery, Chaska.
Walter was born Sept. 25, 1916 in Mankato, Minn., the fifth child of John and Elena (Duerksen) Friesen. His biological parents were unable to care for him. He was adopted through the Lutheran Childrens Friend Society of St. Paul by Valentin and Louise (Marth) Blatz. He was baptized in Gaylord, Minn., and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran in Waconia, Minn. After high school and business college he entered the Service of the Army in 1941 and was discharged in 1943. Walter married Eleanore Hasse on June 29, 1945 at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Chaska. This union was blessed with two children. He worked for American Crystal Sugar Company for 23 years, Can-Tex for two years and Advance-Circuits for nine years. He retired in 1982.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanore, son, Val, his biological and adoptive parents, son-in-law, Rex Schwartz, brothers, Jacob and John, sisters, Lena Gamble and Anna Weber, adoptive sister, Norma Anderson.
Survivors include his daughter Ida Schwartz, of Chaska; grandchildren, Amanda (Tobiah) Whitson, of Coon Rapids, Pierre (Lori) Schwartz, of Andover; great grandchildren, Eleanore and Ethan Whitson, Mason Schwartz; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral arrangements were with the Bertas Funeral Home of Chaska.
