Waconia High School senior Joe Dertinger recently competed at the Men’s US Nationals in Park City, Utah in March. Finishing third in the Giant Slalom, Dertinger also repeated his title as Men’s Junior National Champion in Giant Slalom.
In the Men’s division, Dertinger finished third to Ralph Green and Ian Jansing, two athletes that competed at the 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi, Russia.
Later in the week while playing tourist in Park City, Dertinger also met US Olympic Gold Medalist Ted Ligety, who signed Dertinger’s leg. Skiing since age six and racing since he was 11, Dertinger is a below-the-knee amputee who skies with a prosthetic foot. After talking to Dertinger, Ligety’s publicist asked Dertinger for his autograph, too.
