The Mayer Lutheran boys’ golf team opened the season with a strong 10th place finish at Shattuck-St. Mary’s Harry O’Connor Invitational on April 12.
Finishing 10th of 16 teams with 346 total strokes, LHS improved greatly over its 2013 finish at the same meet, where they finished 13th.
Eagan won the team championship with 306 strokes, following by Holy Family (307). Mayer Lutheran defeated Crosby-Ironton, Cannon Falls, Richfield, Faribault, Kasson-Mantorville, and Fridley.
The Crusaders loaded their roster with seniors, two of whom led the team at Shattuck-St. Mary’s. Seniors Joe Zittergruen and Rob Ryan finished the day with 81 and 82 strokes, respectively. Zittergruen golfed a 42 in, 39 out for his 81, while Ryan was 42 in, 40 out.
Junior Andrew Wolf finished third for LHS, shooting a 43 on the front nine and 45 on the back for 88 total strokes.
Senior Brandon Wroge and freshman Dylan Fisher both shot under 100 on the day as well. Wroge was 45 in, 50 out for 95 total strokes, while Fisher was 55 in, 43 out at 98 strokes.
Senior Matt Huinker also competed for LHS and golf 51 in, 52 out for 103 total strokes.
The LHS girls’ kicked off the season on Tuesday at Watertown-Mayer.
Next week, the boys will compete at the Glencoe County Club on Monday, before hosting an invitational on April 23. LHS will also host St. Peter on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
The LHS girls will compete against the MRC teams on Tuesday, April 22 in LeSueur-Henderson and will host Belle Plaine April 25 at 4 p.m.
