Join the Waconia Area Community Band, which practices from 7:45 to 9:15 p.m. at Waconia High School on Wednesday evenings. Nick VanDuzee is excited to conduct music so that members are inspired to play and their experience is both musically and personally worthwhile. Info: (952) 686-1440.


Coed volleyball league

St. Victoria sale


MAY 8-9 – The St. Victoria Council of Catholic United Financial is having a matching grant rummage sale and a luncheon as well as baked goodies at St. Victoria Parish Center (8228 Victoria Dr.). Sale: Thursday, May 8 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday, May 9 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. (bag/bargain day). All proceeds benefit parish education program.


Thrift Shoppe open


MAY 8-10 – Trending Upward Thrift Shoppe will be open at Promise Church (141 Depot Drive in Waconia) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. all three days. Shopping will help raise funds for MOPS of Waconia and St. Boni. Info: (952) 261-2343.


Steak fry dinner


SATURDAY, MAY 10 – A steak fry dinner will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. at American Legion Post 150 (233 Olive Street, Waconia). Includes baked potato, cole slaw, bread, beverage.


Spring Book Sale


SATURDAY, MAY 10 – Do you have extra books around your home?  Waconia Friends of the Library are looking for book donations for the upcoming spring sale on May 10. Books of all kinds, especially children’s, are accepted year round. Drop off donations at the front desk at the Waconia Library. Books on tape and DVDs also accepted. If you’re unable to bring them to the library, the Friends will pick them up: Georgia at (952) 657-2277. Proceeds benefit the Waconia Library.


East Union plant sale


SATURDAY, MAY 10 – East Union Lutheran (15180 CR 40, Carver) is sponsoring and plant and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Annuals, perennials, planters, baskets, bird houses, bird feeders, and homemade baked goods. Rain or shine.  Info: (952) 448-3459.


Waconia VFW meetings


MONDAY, MAY 12 – The Waconia VFW Post 5462, Men’s Auxiliary, and Women’s Auxiliary will host their month meeting at 7:30 p.m. Next meeting: June 9.


Public Health Shot Clinic


MONDAY, MAY 12 – Carver County Public Health (600 E 4th St., Chaska) provides immunizations, or shots, to residents who don’t have health insurance or whose insurance does not cover shots, from 3 to 5 p.m. Shots for adults and children available. Suicide support group


TUESDAY, MAY 13 – The Suicide Bereavement Support Group meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at the Waconia Moravian Church (209 E 2nd St.). Open to anyone who has lost a loved one to suicide.

TUESDAY, MAY 13 – The Waconia American Legion members will meet at 7:30 p.m. Next meeting: June 10.


Weight Watchers event

MBC blood drive


TUESDAY, MAY 13 – Memorial Blood Center will host a blood drive at Faith Lutheran Church (800 Waconia Pkwy)in Waconia from noon to 7 p.m. Memorial Blood Center supplies all the blood to Ridgeview Medical Center. To schedule an appointment, contact Beth at (952) 913-6624. Walk-ins are accepted.


Catholic United meeting


TUESDAY, MAY 13 – St. Joseph Catholic United Council will meet in the Parish Center at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments, dessert will be served. Everyone welcome.

Relay fundraiser


THURSDAY, MAY 15 – Cowbells Against Cancer is having a Relay for Life fundraising event at The Stash (544 S Elm St.) in Waconia from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Ten percent of the total sales will be given back to the Waconia Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society.


NAMI meeting


THURSDAY, MAY 15 – The support group of National Alliance on Mental Illness will meet at 7 p.m. at Waconia Moravian Church, 209 2nd St. E.


Early Childhood screen.


MAY 15-16 – District 110 staff offers Early Childhood Screening to check a child’s overall development and health. Recommended screening age: 3 1/2 to 4 years. Screening will take place from 2:30 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 15 and from 8:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. on Friday, May 16 at the ECFC, 520 Industrial Blvd. Info: 442-0613.


Poppy Day


FRIDAY, MAY 16 – Poppy Day will be Friday, May 16. The American Legion Post 150 Auxiliary volunteers will distribute the familiar red, hand-crafted poppies honoring American veterans. All proceeds are invested in local programs. The Auxiliary thanks citizens for their contributions in advance.

Chamber trip to Cuba


MONDAY, MAY 19 – Travel to Cuba!  Learn about this exciting opportunity to visit Cuba this November  with Chamber Explorations and the Waconia Chamber of Commerce. Travel meeting from 5:30 to  6:30 p.m. at Rey Azteca, 813 Marketplace Drive, Waconia.
