The Waconia Lakers amateur baseball team opened its 2014 campaign at Norwood on Sunday, May 4, bringing home a 7-4 victory.
Both teams posted two runs in the first inning and one in the second to make it a 3-3 game after two. The Lakers held a one-run lead after three; they would carry it until the sixth inning when Waconia scored three runs on an RBI double from Jeremy Salden to open a 7-3 lead.
The Indians managed another run in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn’t string any more together and the Lakers snagged the win. Waconia starts the season 1-0, while the Indians drop to 0-1.
Evan Buhr picked up the win from the mound for the Lakers, throwing the first six innings. He gave up three runs (one earned) on three hits. He walked four Indians and struck out eight. Ronnie Olson closed for Waconia, throwing three innings and striking out two Indians, while giving up four hits.
Olson was 2-2 at the plate with an RBI and three walks. Kevin Bullis was 2-5, while Buhr, Ben Smothers, Tom Lyons, and Salden each had a hit.
The Lakers are in action again this Sunday, May 11 when they host the Winsted Wildcats.
