The Waconia School District announced Monday, May 5 that current assistant coach Patrick Lenton has been selected as the new WHS boys’ hockey coach, beginning next season.

“We are excited to have hired an individual with coach Lenton’s experience, leadership qualities, and enthusiasm to work with our students athletes on and off the ice,” Waconia Activities Director Jill Johnson said.

Lenton brings experience to the Wildcat hockey program as both a coach and a player. As a three-year starter for the Maple Grove High School team, Lenton led his team as captain and was described by his teammates as a true competitor. His 22-year career continues today as he still enjoys getting out on the ice for men’s hockey league games in St. Louis Park and Brooklyn Park. Lenton’s coaching experience includes three years as the head coach for the Bantam team in Mankato and most recently, as a Waconia boys’ assistant coach for the 2013-14 season.

Lenton is in his first year with the district, teaching first and fifth grade physical education and DAPE at both Bayview Elementary and Clearwater Middle schools in Waconia.

Lenton said he is honored to serve the Waconia School District and the community as both a team and as the new head coach.

“I have a great passion for the game and enjoy helping student athletes reach their goals in both competition and in the classroom,” he said. “I look forward to working with our talented student athletes and continuing to build the Wildcat hockey program.”

Lenton takes over the team from Dan Benham, who stepped down as head coach earlier this spring to spend more time with his family. Benham has left Lenton a team that is full of rising potential, and Lenton said he is excited to continue to grow the already-established traditions.

“I am very excited to begin this new chapter in my career and am even more excited to continue to grow the tradition of Wildcat hockey,” he said. “We have some talented returning players coming back as well as a young and hungry group of soon-to-be sophomores that should help us be very competitive and take us to the next level.”

Lenton has scheduled a player meeting for anyone interested in joining the boys’ hockey team for this Friday morning, May 16 at 7:30 a.m. in the WHS auditorium. Parents and students interested in finding out more about the 2014-15 season as welcome to attend an informational meeting on May 19 at 7 p.m. in the WHS auditorium.
