The beloved classic, The Wizard of Oz, returns to the stage in grand scale and is set to delight family audiences and all generations alike back to the wondrous discoveries of the Emerald City.
Chaska Valley Family Theatre (CVFT) welcomes more than 100 talented community members — including 20 families — and a 32 piece live orchestra to the stage this June.
Standing true to the original script and score of the 1939 MGM film, audience members will be whisked away alongside Dorothy and her little dog, Toto after a tornado sweeps through her Kansas home.
The wickedness and wonder comes to life onstage complete with Munchkins, Witches, Haunted Forests and roller-skating Monkeys. Dorothy (Melaina Rairamo, Eden Prairie High School sophomore) and her newfound friends, Scarecrow (Micah Mills, Mankato State junior/Theater Major), Tinman (Kelly Jeremiason, Orono Educator) and the Lion (Uchenna Chidozle, Eden Prairie resident and youth minister) journey on a quest to find heart, courage, brains and most importantly, home.
“This story is one that is near and dear to my heart,” says CVFT Director/Chaska resident and Board Member Jenny Boothroyd. “Transporting audience members on a journey through the magical and mystical Oz has always been a dream of mine. To do it with my CVFT ‘family’ makes it even more special.”
The Wizard of Oz cast and crew is comprised of more than 200 volunteers hailing from Carver, Chaska, Minnetonka, Chanhassen, Eden Prairie, Victoria and more.
In addition to the theater rehearsals, the family-friendly group also works on sets, special effects, costumes, hair and make-up, box office, promotions, and concessions. The group, founded by District 112 educators in 1995, is comprised of children of all ages and adults with a variety of backgrounds and talents.
“Nearly every CVFT show is filled with an eclectic mix of teachers, bankers, children, grandparents, college students and more — all coming together and creating lifelong family memories,” says Heather Brands, CVFT Producer and Theatre Liaison, Arts Consortium of Carver County.
Chaska Valley Family Theatre is set to take audience members on a magical journey and bring to life this timeless MGM musical score and story.
