The first year of the ASPIRE Athletes of the Week wrapped up last Thursday with a dinner at the Rush Creek Golf Club in Maple Grove, celebrating the 35 athletes, their coaches, athletic directors, parents, siblings, friends, and teammates. The night was hosted by Frank Vascallero from WCCO TV.
Recent Waconia graduate Kiela DeVlaeminck was among the 35 chosen Athletes of the Week, having been chosen the week of May 16.
DeVlaeminck was the Wildcats’ go-to pitcher for the softball team for the past few years and threw in 17 games this season, boasting a 10-3 record. She threw over 90 innings and struck out 72 batters. She held an earned run average of just 1.849.
DeVlaeminck also excelled at the plate, holding a team-high batting average of .460. She was 23-50 at the plate, including two home runs and 11 RBIs. She held a team-high on base percentage of .491.
She is a three-time All-Conference selection, played four years of varsity softball, and also received her team’s Golden Bat and Most Valuable Player awards this season.
The ASPIRE Athlete of the Week program was created by the ASPIRE Beverage Company in partnership with WCCO TV and ESPN Radio to recognize and reward high school seniors that demonstrate greatness in athletics, academics, community involvement, and character.
DeVlaeminck was also involved with SADD, the National Honor Society, and the Conservation Club at Waconia High School. She will attend the College of St. Benedict in the fall and hopes to play softball. She is the daughter of Mike and Kathy DeVlaeminck of Plato.
