In a best-of-three series against No. 4 Glencoe last week, the No. 5 Mayer Blazers were eliminated from the CRVL North playoffs in two games, dashing the team’s hopes of a Region 7C tournament entry.

Facing the Brewers in Game 1 on Wednesday, July 23 in Glencoe, the Blazers took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning and added two more for the 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Unfortunately for Mayer, the Brewers can storming back in the bottom of the fourth with three runs to tie the game. The Blazers wouldn’t be able to score again, while Glencoe would add one more run for the eventual 4-3 Mayer loss.

On Friday night in Winsted, the Brewers ended Mayer’s season in an 8-5 game in favor of Glencoe.

“It was a good year,” Blazers’ manager Joe Berrios said, “and we look forward to an even better season next year.”

While the Blazers’ 2014 season may be over, Mayer pitcher Matt Schreder will play on, as he has been drafted by the Winsted Wildcats to join their Region 7C tournament run.

Mayer finished the 2014 season with a 5-17 record.
