For The Patriot
The past three weeks of performances for Waconia show choirs had a good mix of high notes, with a few low notes as they sang the final chord of the competition season.
Power Company finished the season with two grand championships, two first runners up and two third runner-up placements – all in the open division.
In one of their best seasons ever, The Current finished the year with five grand champion placements in the prep division competitions, and one open division placement of third runner-up.
Power Company’s band, Megawatt, tied their best season ever with four best band placements.
Illuminations placing as second runner up was the group’s first trophy placement in its three years of competition.
Competition on the weekend of Feb. 11 found the Waconia show choirs in Lacrosse, Wisconsin, at the Logan Showcase at Lacrosse Logan high school. All three high school show choirs competed: Illuminations, The Current and Power Company.
Illuminations brought home the second runner up trophy in the woman’s division. All groups participating in this division were high school groups comprised of only female singers.
The Current, once again, took grand champion in the prep division, and also scored high enough to participate in finals. With their prep division win, The Curre
nt was also awarded best choreography and best costumes in the prep division.
Power Company, while competing against The Current and five other groups, took first runner up and was also awarded best choreography in the open division. The Current took third runner up.
On February 18, The Waconia family of show choirs hosted their own competition, Star Power. While the groups do not compete, they do perform as exhibition.
Middle school groups, The Pulse and Shockwave, got the competition started with their exhibition performances their shows early in the day. Illuminations and The Current performed during the prelim schedule. Power Company took the stage as the final performance of the evening before final awards with additional light effects that enhanced the drama of their show.
The results of the groups competing at Star Power were as follows: The Classics from Wheaton Warrenville South high school was named second runner up. Vocalmotive from Bemidji High School was named second runner up with awards for best vocals, best band and best female vocalist. The grand champion was Rhythm in Gold (RIG) from Kennedy high school, Bloomington. RIG also received best choreography for their ghost themed performance, which included a Ghostbusters set.
Waconia’s final completion date was Feb. 25, and Mother Nature decided to throw in a little weather chaos into the mix to make this final competition a bit more exciting.
All three high school show choirs were to travel to Davenport, Iowa, to compete at the South East Polk RAM showcase, but due to a Thursday night/Friday morning snow storm bringing a foot a snow to locations between Waconia and Davenport, the groups were not able to make the trip.
Fortunately for Waconia, there was a competition in Hastings, where several groups from Iowa were registered to compete. While neither contingent of choirs could get to their perspective competitions, they effectively switch places, stayed closer to home to compete and avoided having to travel throu
gh the area hit by the snowstorm.
At Hasting high school’s Swingin’ on the River competition, The Current took grand champion in the prep division. Illuminations also participated in this division, but did not place.
Power Company was named third runner up with the best ballad of the competition and our stage crew was named best crew of the event.
With the competition season complete, the focus of the next few weeks will be Spectacular, which will take place from March 30 to April 1. Spectacular is the final performances of the year. It is an event that includes small group performances and solo exhibitions from the singer dancers from the various show choirs as well as final performances of the competition sets for hometown audiences.
