Wednesday are taking on a special meaning at Unhinged Pizza locations in NYA and the surrounding area.
As a way to bring in seniors and community members, Unhinged Pizza will offer food specials for seniors from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at all locations as well as activities, free food and coffee from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the NYA location.
The effort is part of an initiative to bring seniors and the community together, according to Tracy and Ed Becker who joined Unhinged Pizza in June as general managers in NYA.
“It was to kind of have a place where seniors can go and hang out,” said Tracy. “That’s how it started is to have a place where seniors can go and hang out all day.”
During the kickoff Senior Day at Unhinged Pizza in NYA on March 8, seniors from nearby Peace Villa, The Harbor and The Haven packed the restaurant, enjoying food before several stuck around for cards and cribbage. Plans are to have bingo as well as other games in future weeks.
“It’s going really well,” said Tracy. “It’s nice to visit with people and see how they are doing.”
Given recent snow, the weekly event could not have come at a better time for seniors.
“In the winter you get stuck in all the time, so it’s nice to get out,” said Tracy.
Tracy added that she and Ed’s kids Sam, Jack, Emma and Eddie can benefit from the event as well.
“We homeschool so our kids are home all the time and I really want them to have those relationships with the elderly too,” said Tracy. “It’s really important to me.”
Unhinged Pizza majority owner Shonna Caswell said she was welcome to the idea of Senior Day.
“This would be a nice gathering place,” she said. “We’re just looking for something to have one more reason to get out in the middle of the week and a place for people to get-together.”
While a lot of seniors were at the kickoff event in NYA, Caswell said even small groups of six would make the Senior Day a success.
“We want to people come in even if it’s just to pop in,” she said. “It’s just nice to have a place.”
Senior Day are held every week at Unhinged Pizza locations with NYA encouraging seniors from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and offering free coffee and desserts from 2 to 4:30 p.m.
“I just want it to always be busy and have the community know that they can come in and hang out,” said Tracy. “We just want to be out in the community and helping the community and letting them know we are here.”
