Shelbe Jean Emma (Schrupp) Balzum was born March 6, 1938 in Benton Township of Carver County, the daughter of Henry and Emma (Gruenhagen) Schrupp. She was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Norwood Young America on March 27, 1938 and later confirmed her faith at St. John’s Lutheran Church on April 16, 1952. Her confirmation verse was John 15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
Shelbe attended St. John’s Lutheran School and later Central High School. On August 13, 1955, Shelbe was united in marriage with Robert G. Balzum at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Radtke as officiant. This union was blessed with children Keith, Dean, Cindy and Connie.
Shelbe had always loved to work around food and with others. Her working career involved a short time at Tuebert’s Hamburger Stand, Hillcrest Café for over 30 years, Bloomin Baskets Floral Shop for many years and for over 15 years at the coffee shop within Methodist Hospital. Whatever she was doing, she loved that she was doing it for someone else.
Shelbe was a devoted member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and School. She was active in the LWML, Bible studies and was a frequent volunteer at the school where she was known by all the students as “Grandma Shelbe.” Shelbe also volunteered at Mayer Lutheran High School during its rummage sale and most recently as a Bingo caller at the Harbor.
Shelbe never let her health slow her down. A hard worker, she was constantly on the go and always had time for others. She would do anything for anyone. She enjoyed rummage sales, collecting figurines, and baking her “famous” chocolate chip cookies.
Shelbe is preceded in death by her parents Henry and Emma Schrupp; brothers Donover Schrupp and Hillard Schrupp; father-in-law and mother-in-law Robert and Mabel Balzum; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Dorothy Schrupp, David Sprengeler, Ronald and Florence Balzum.
