LTE: NYA blood donation event rules changed

To the editor,
This letter is especially intended for all the blood donors in the area. There will be a bloodmobile Tuesday, May 16, at Willkommen Pavilion, starting at noon and ending at 6 p.m. The last time the bloodmobile was in town we had a major staffing issue and the average time for a donor to go through the process was 2 hours.

That is unacceptable! Conversations have been held with the Blood Center and they guarantee me that the staffing ratio – beds to staff to donor – is correct. I am not so sure! May 16 will be a test – only appointments will be taken at their scheduled time. Those coming early or late will not be allowed unless there is an open spot. Walk-ins will be under the same rule – you will not even be checked in unless there is a “no show.” If this process fails to make a smooth running operation, NHQ will be informed again, that their ratio system does not work.

My apologies for the March bloodmobile, and now I ask for your cooperation. As I said earlier, blood is in short supply, especially with the summer months just ahead, so please keep your appointment. If something comes up, please call me at 952-467-3214 or 612-840-2268, so I have the opportunity to find a replacement. Scheduled donors are more important this time than ever, but I also know that walk-ins make up for the “No Shows” – that won’t work this time!

Thanks for your patience, we just need to remember: for every unit of blood donated, four lives will be affected!
