June marks peak season for the Carver County Parks Department. Their event calendar is filled each day with an event, from stand-up paddleboarding to archery and family log rolling.
“With good weather, things should off without a hitch,” said the Parks
and Trails Supervisor Sam Pertz.
There are four regional parks and trails in Carver County. Lake Minnewashta and Lake Waconia Regional Park, Baylor Regional Park and Campground and Dakota Rail Regional Trail.
“We really ramp up in the summer, all aspects of our department,” Pertz said.
He said that planning for summer seasons usually begin in October and November, by January they have most things set in stone and by March they are starting training.
Everything on the park’s website are events put on exclusively by them, but Pertz said that the department is always working collaboratively to put together events for everyone.
“We see what their needs are and how we can meet them,” he said.
Pertz said that Carver County’s parks are unique to parks you may find in more metro areas. He said their goal is to offer traditional recreation. He said in city parks you may find basketball and tennis courts but Carver County has well maintained, natural areas. Also, no matter what season, the parks don’t close.
“You can access nature in a way you can’t in a city park,” he said.
Pertz said their goal is to promote active and healthy lifestyles and engaging with
nature is one way to do that.
Each park has activities unique to itself.
At Baylor Regional Park, Saturday Morning Mischief is held from Memorial Day to Labor Day. It is a guided family activity so families can get outside and learn about nature at the same time.
Pertz also says that Carver County Parks are unique because they are partnered with the Minnesota Astronomical Soceity.
Together they hold “star parties” in the parks.
You can find each event on the Carver County parks event calendar. To look at the calendar or to reserve a park go to www.co.carver.mn.us/departments/public-works/parks-recreation
