A group of 12-year-old baseball players from Waconia are eagerly awaiting their turn to play in the American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame Invitational Tournament in New York, later this month.
The Waconia team, made up of eleven Metro Baseball League players, will be one of 104 teams from across the country in the week-long tournament, slated for July 29-Aug. 4. The tournament is held at the birthplace of baseball in Cooperstown, New York, at the 22-field Cooperstown Dreams Park. The opening ceremonies kick off the week followed by skills competitions, including fielding, base running and – most dramatically – the home run derby.
The team will stay the week at the Cooperstown Dream Park in club-houses along-side all the other teams. They will also have the opportunity to visit the National Baseball Hall of Fame and see the induction of this year’s Hall of Fame honorees. It will be a busy and fun-filled week.
Team members include: Aidan O’Brien, Bennett Tomes, Brayden Kaczmarek, Brody Leen, Bryce Anderson, Colton Rieck, Isaac Damlo, Mason Bach, Noah Strei, Tucker Ohm & Tyler Johnson. The team is coached by Dan O’Brien & Ryan Anderson.
The team has been planning the trip for almost a year. Forming the team early has helped the players raise money for the trip. Each player is responsible for his own share of the fees which keeps them motivated and involved. The team has participated in various fundraising events within the Waconia community. Thank you to the many sponsors who have already made a contribution to the team including, Mackenthuns, Waconia Fire Department, Waconia Lions, Hoppers, Waconia Brewing, Ground Round, Ovation Othodontics, Klein Bank, Waconia Ford, MinuteMan Press & the Waconia Baseball Association.
Look for a future article in this newspaper for an update on the results of the tournament.
