Central volleyball wins opener

The Central High School volleyball team got off to a good start for the 2017 campaign, sweeping the Glencoe-Silver Lake Panthers 3-0 Aug. 29. The Raiders were strong from start to finish, winning 25-15, 25-21 and 25-20.

“I was very happy how everyone contributed,” coach Sarah Hammers said. “Sadie Erickson did a great job as first server to get us a few early. I think the girls were ready from the first serve and did not let up until the end of the match.”

The depth of the Central team was on display, as the attack came from all angles (eight players had kills in the win) and many Raiders made plays on defense (10 players recorded digs).
“It is our depth and our versatility,” Hammers said of the Raiders’ convincing win. “The setters did a really good job distributing the sets to all positions. I am very happy with our over all offense hitting .257 as a team is a great way to start the season. I think defensively we are adding a lot of strength to the back row with Frankie [Mackenthun] and Maddy [Johnson] and that will help when Mary [Wenisch] is in the front row. Our blocking has also improved.”
