Ridgeview handles data breach

By Staff Reports

Ridgeview Medical Center has informed some members of Ridgeview Community Network that a security breach may have affected some of their protected health information, according to a press release from Ridgeview.

According to the press release, affected members were notified on Sept. 8 that their email addresses had been exposed by Ridgeview Community Network. According to Ridgeview, on July 10 and 11, Ridgeview Community Network sent a general survey request to network members. The survey was sent to a group of people via email – which visibly included email address and was not blind-copied, and allowed all recipients of the survey to see the email addresses of other recipients.

Ridgeview stresses that the only information that was breached was member email addresses used by Ridgeview Community Network – no other member of patient information, medical information or identifier was breached, according to the hospital.

Ridgeview states that because the breach was limited to email addresses, there are no recommended actions for affected members to take. The hospital states that staff have been re-educated about the need to keep protected health information secure at all times to avoid future incidents, according to the press release.
