The Waconia girls’ soccer team had only one game this week, the season conference opener on the road at Delano.
After being defeated by the Tigers the last two seasons, the Wildcats were happy to come away with a 3-1 victory on Aug. 28.
“This was a great opportunity for our team to start changing that tide,” head coach Mike Bruggeman said.
With goals from senior Kayla Christensen, senior Kelly Luce, and junior Jacelyn Zapf, assists came from junior Bailey Breeggemann, junior Mackenzie Hedlund, and freshman Jaidyn Zapf.
The Wildcats had 17 shots over the Tigers’ 10, and the Waconia defense only allowed three Delano shots in the entire second half.
“As we’ve focused on our defense and field organization over the past couple weeks, it was great to see the girls hold Delano to 10 shots for the game,” Bruggeman said.
The Wildcats will play No. 5 (Class A) Orono tonight. They will host Mound-Westonka on Saturday at 2 p.m. Next week begins on the road at Glencoe-Silver Lake (Sept. 11), but ends at home against Hutchinson (Sept. 13) and Shakopee (Sept. 15). The Wildcats are 1-2 this season.
